SUMMARY:Bullock Museum: High Noon Talk: Home\, Heat\, Money\, God - (Austin)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating look at how Texas’s unique landscape shaped modern architecture. \nEvent Details \nDive into key architectural works\, the challenges of designing for extreme climates\, and balancing innovation and tradition in Texas’s most iconic structures with the authors of Home\, Heat\, Money\, God: Texas and Modern Architecture. From sweltering heat to the oil-driven economy\, architect Ben Koush and professor and architectural historian Kathryn O’Rourke unravel the complexities behind Texas’s built environment. \nThe book conveys the breadth and diversity of the state’s outstanding body of modern architecture\, built as Texas became a major force in national politics and an economic powerhouse. The book is thematically organized on social history and includes more than 250 of Koush’s photographs. Koush and O’Rourke will examine major works of architecture and ways that historic preservation\, Texas’s rich legacy of architectural photography\, and an imperative to write an inclusive\, accessible work of architectural history defined the project. \nAuthors Ben Koush and Kathryn O’Rourke will be available to sign copies of the book\, which can be purchased on site\, after the High Noon Talk from 1–1:30 p.m. \nLearn more

SUMMARY:SAAACAM: “MILES OF SMILES” - (San Antonio)
DESCRIPTION:The doors to The Little Carver open at 5:30pm\, and the film begins at 6pm. \n“MILES OF SMILES” (NR)(58 minutes)(1989)Producers: Paul Wagner and Jack Santino. \nAs service workers in a luxurious sleeping-car train system\, Pullman porters had both the highest status in the black community and the lowest rank on the train. They were trapped in the dual roles of charming host and obedient servant\, and their constant smiles–even in the face of unreasonable demands by white passengers–were part of the job requirement. \nJack Santino’s interviews with retired porters provide extensive firsthand accounts of their work\, the job inequities they faced\, the formation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters\, and the aborted Pullman porter strike of 1928. Through the testimony of rank-and-file workers as well as key figures such as E. D. Nixon\, the porter who initiated the Montgomery bus boycott and helped launch the career of Martin Luther King\, Jr. and C.L. Dellums\, the only surviving founding member of the BSCP\, “Miles of Smiles\, Years of Struggle” illuminates the Pullman porters’ struggle for dignity. \nImmediately following the film\, join us for the lively panel discussion. Brought to you in part by Humanities Texas. \nADMISSION IS FREE\, BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! \nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:Conspirare Presents: ReCast
DESCRIPTION:A tale of two Texans\, both exiles from their respective and vastly different religious upbringings – Fundamentalist Christianity and Orthodox Judaism. An unlikely pairing? Maybe. But then they share many unexpected commonalities as well. Immerse yourself in music of deep lyricism\, bold gestures and striking rhythms. Mass in Exile and Requiem in the Light will be sung by GRAMMY-winning Conspirare\, in English\, and accompanied by instruments. \nWhere:\nSt Martin’s Lutheran Church 606 W 15 St.\nAustin\, TX 78701\nPlenty of free on-site parking available. \nWhen:\n8p.m. for both concerts \nEvent website:  https://www.conspirare.org/tickets/recast/ [conspirare.org]
