Annual celebrations such as Texas Recycles Days are part of H-E-B’s longstanding pledge to reduce its impact on the environment. Through the company’s Our Texas, Our Future commitment, H-E-B’s mission is to increase awareness, access, and education around sustainability efforts that help preserve land, water, and air in Texas.
Furthering its commitment to supporting sustainable efforts within the community, H-E-B works with Keep Texas Recycling, a program of Keep Texas Beautiful, to help fund municipal recycling grants to cities and counties that need support launching and improving recycling programs. In 2023, H-E-B gifted $157,000 in Community Recycling Grants to support community recycling centers in Burleson County, Cuero, Ingleside, Pharr, San Angelo, and Texas City. The grants went to support efforts and improvements such as outreach and education initiatives and replacement equipment. These efforts will strengthen recycling initiatives in these areas, supporting more than 340,000 Texans.
Additionally, through funding from H-E-B, the Our Texas, Our Future grants in partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful is providing 10 communities with a total of $25,000, which was shared among the chosen communities, to support educational and programming opportunities related to sustainability, recycling, litter prevention, beautification, and water conservation.
Beyond the company’s practices, H-E-B Partners (employees) across the state are committed to taking their own steps to protect and beautify Texas. Throughout the year and on Texas Recycles Day, Partners will volunteer at events throughout the communities H-E-B serves. To celebrate this Texas Recycles Day, H-E-B works with organizations across Texas in ways that provide recycling opportunities and raise awareness. Among these partnerships, H-E-B partnered with Unilever to celebrate Texas Recycles Day at Agnes Cotton Academy in San Antonio where volunteers will build a new playground made from recycled materials. Each year on Texas Recycles Day, H-E-B also announces monetary gifts to SAISD schools who participate in a recycling contest. The grand prize winner will receive a check for $10,000, and all schools who participate will receive funding to continue their recycling efforts at their campus.
In addition to its initiatives to divert waste throughout its company and the communities it serves, H-E-B has collection bins where customers can recycle retail shopping bags, produce bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper bags, and plastic wrap. In 2022, H-E-B recycled 19 million pounds of plastic throughout its operation, including plastic from its collection bins. H-E-B products such as Field & Future trash bags and bags for recyclables, are made from up to 65 percent and 30 percent post-consumer recycled plastic collected from H-E-B stores and facilities, respectively.
H-E-B also has rolled out a product line, joined a product labeling program, and provides plastic collection bins at all stores to support customers in their sustainability and recycling practices. Field & Future by H-E-B is an environmentally minded brand of household, personal care and baby products designed to be clean and green. Many products across the brand are made with recycled or recyclable content, such as Field & Future bath tissue, paper towels, and scour pads. Currently, there are nearly 120 Field & Future by H-E-B products on shelf.
Also in 2021, H-E-B became part of How2Recycle, a program that places clear, easy-to-read labels on products to let customers know if the packaging can be recycled, which parts are recyclable, and importantly, how to prepare material for recycling to reduce contamination. The How2Recycle labels are already on more than 3,000 H-E-B branded items, which include H-E-B, Hill Country Fare, H-E-B Select Ingredients, H-E-B Organics, and Central Market products.
Contamination is still the number one barrier to effective recycling. To limit contamination in residential recycling, here are some tips and best practices from H-E-B’s Our Texas, Our Future website.
Since 2012, H-E-B has given more than $20 million to over 500 environmental organizations in land and water conservation, habitat and coastal preservation, and community cleanups. As the presenting sponsor for the Texas Parks centennial celebration, H-E-B recently made a $1 million donation to support programming aimed to engage all Texans in discovering and enjoying the nearly 90 state parks in Texas. Additionally, Field & Future by H-E-B products supports Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation in efforts such as coastal conservation along the Texas Gulf Coast, Black Bear restoration in West Texas, and the establishment of Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, the first new state park to be opened in North Texas in 25 years.
