Bullock Museum: Quilt in a Jar – (Austin)

January 11, 2025 @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm

Join us for a hands-on workshop that blends art, history, and storytelling!

Inspired by the spirit of community and resilience highlighted in the exhibition A Better Life for Their Children, participants will learn traditional quilting techniques presented by the African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio.

Master Quilter Deb Harris of the African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio will lead participants in this special workshop that celebrates the rich history and artistry of African American quilting, a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of quilting within the African American community, explore unique techniques, and even try their hand at creating their own quilting square, also known as “mug rugs,” using provided materials in the Quilt in a Jar.

Whether you’re an experienced quilter or new to the craft, the program offers a welcoming space to connect, create, and be part of a vibrant quilting tradition. Join us for this special opportunity to share stories, skills, and participate in the community spirit of quilting.

The workshop is recommended for ages 12+ and limited to 25 seats. Quilting materials and refreshments will be provided.

The workshop is $5 for Museum Members and $10 for non-members.
