H-E-B celebrates Veterans Day across Texas

Named a top workplace for military Veterans, H-E-B celebrates with 300 Veterans Day community events and gifts a mortgage-free, furnished home to military Veteran

On Veterans Day and every day, H-E-B Partners across the state pay respect and honor the sacrifices of our nation’s military Veterans and their families. This year, H-E-B Partners will host more than 300 appreciation events and community outreach efforts and gift a mortgage-free home to a wounded military Veteran, among other celebrations and activations throughout the state.

Among this year’s celebrations, H-E-B stores across Texas will distribute gift bags filled with H-E-B brand items and a note of gratitude, handing them to Veterans inside stores and at local Veteran nonprofits, including community VFW and American Legion locations. Many stores will also host Veterans Day celebration receptions.

On Veterans Day, H-E-B, in partnership with Homes for Our Troops, gifted its 46th custom-built, fully furnished, mortgage-free home to U.S. Army SFC Justin Menchaca and his family in Spring Branch, north of San Antonio. Home dedications such as this are part of H-E-B’s Homes Built for Heroes program, which dedicated five homes in 2023 to severely wounded Veterans and their families, bringing the total donated from H-E-B and the H-E-B Tournament of Champions to 46 homes.

Over the years, H-E-B Operation Appreciation and the H-E-B Tournament of Champions have dedicated more than $6 million to this ongoing effort to build and furnish homes for heroes. Since 2013, H-E-B has partnered with organizations such as the Gary Sinise FoundationHomes for Our Troops and Operation Finally Home to build these specially-adapted homes across Texas. With additional homes currently in progress, H-E-B expects to exceed gifting 50 mortgage-free homes next year.

H-E-B Partners, and the USO, recently gathered with 10,000 military families at fall festival events held at Fort Cavazos and Joint Base San Antonio to celebrate their selfless service. In honor of Veterans Day, H-E-B also presented a $10,000 check to Wreaths Across America provide wreaths on the headstones of fallen military Veterans.

H-E-B customers also can offer a salute to military Veterans by donating to H-E-B’s Operation Appreciation checkstand donation campaign. Funds raised through the campaign will go towards supporting our Homes Built for Heroes program and military nonprofits that provide support to active-duty service members, Veterans, and their families. Through Dec. 5, H-E-B customers can ask their cashiers to add $1, $3, and $5 to their grocery bill or donations can be made online when placing Curbside and Home Delivery orders.

H-E-B’s deep commitment to the military started with the service of Howard E. Butt Sr., who served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, H-E-B’s Operation Appreciation program has embodied the company’s enduring commitment to support and honor our military heroes.

“At H-E-B, we’re proud to continue our longstanding commitment to honor the dedication and sacrifices military Veterans and their families make on behalf of our nation,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Group Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity, and Environmental Affairs. “As we celebrate 10 years of our H-E-B Operation Appreciation program, we look forward to continuing our support for military service members, Veterans, and their families across Texas.”

Committed to honoring our nation’s heroes throughout the year, H-E-B Operation Appreciation supports and honors, military service members, Veterans, and their families within H-E-B and throughout the community. Launched in 2013, the program has provided more than $12 million in support to military-based nonprofits in Texas as well as efforts to provide employment opportunities to military service members and their spouses and provide mortgage-free homes to severely wounded Veterans.

Additionally, H-E-B holds community events throughout the year to celebrate military spouses, support youth education initiatives, and honor holidays such as Independence Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. And to offer a taste of home, H-E-B sends hundreds of care packages to service members deployed across the world.

H-E-B, which was recently named a top workplace for military Veterans, has hired more than 28,000 Veterans and military spouses since 2013.
