H-E-B honors life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

H-E-B was founded on the unwavering belief that each and every person counts. It’s a philosophy the company embraces and champions throughout the year.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, H-E-B Partners and communities across the nation take time to reflect on his life and legacy and his call for unity, love and hope.

Each year in Texas, thousands of our H-E-B Partners take part in nearly a dozen marches across the state, including in San Antonio, which is home to one of the nation’s largest events. Due to current Covid-19 infection rates, H-E-B will not participate in in-person events and marches this year. Still, H-E-B remains committed to organizations across Texas that carry on Dr. King’s vision and dream.

For many years in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, H-E-B has supported more than 120 nonprofits with sponsorships and donations for scholarships, education programs, speaker series, children’s activities, and community celebrations. Among these sponsorships are support for the the City of San Antonio Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission; Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee of Brazoria County; the Plano Community Forum’s MLK Celebration Event; the African American Leadership Institute in Austin; MLK Dallas Dream Forward; New Braunfels MLK Association, Inc.; Enrichment and Brotherhood Organization for Northwest Youth in Houston; and the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum’s 2022 Civil Rights Pioneers and Activists Recognition Award in Fort Worth.

Recognizing and supporting the work Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. influences is not relegated to one day a year. H-E-B has a longstanding commitment to empower diverse voices and strengthen communities throughout the year in Texas. For H-E-B, this important work can be seen through its Be the Change initiative. Launched last year, the initiative builds upon the retailer’s established Diversity and Inclusion framework, which drives the company to be a better employer, retailer, and community partner. This work is also aligned with the company’s annual Be the Change donation campaign, an effort that raises funds that benefit nonprofits focused on education, equity, and empowerment.

Be the Change will kick off its second year with Black History Month in February. Throughout the year, Be the Change will carry out this message by recognizing other observances such as Hispanic Heritage Month, Disability Employment Awareness Month, Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Woman’s History Month, among others.

At H-E-B, we believe that Each and Every Person Counts. The mission of the Diversity and Inclusion Department is to educate, celebrate and drive transformative change in H-E-B’s workforce, workplace, and marketplace that aligns with and advances the company’s core business strategies. Together with 13 Diversity Leadership Councils and more than 500 Diversity Champions across the company, H-E-B engages Partners and the community in company-wide diversity and inclusion programs and observances.
