H-E-B Summer of Giving hits $2 million goal for Texas food banks

With help from H-E-B customers across the state, H-E-B hit its goal and raised $2 million for Texas food banks through its Summer of Giving campaign. H-E-B is deeply appreciative of its loyal customers who stepped up in the fight against hunger, helping to support Feeding Texas and its network of food banks across the state.

“Thank you, Texas! We’re so proud to have hit our $2 million goal, an effort we could not have achieved without the help of our amazing customers,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Group Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs. “No matter what challenge we’ve been faced with this year, we are incredibly humbled by the generous spirit and unwavering support our customers show to help their fellow Texans.”

For H-E-B’s Summer of Giving initiative, which ran from July 29 through Sept. 22, the company donated a portion of proceeds from every customer transaction that included at least one H-E-B Brand item.

Driven by its Helping Here philosophy, H-E-B has increased its support to Texas food banks throughout this unprecedented year. So far in 2020, the San Antonio-based retailer has donated more than 22.5 million pounds of food or 17 million meals. Earlier this year, H-E-B also gifted nearly $2 million to 18 food banks affiliated with Feeding Texas and hunger relief organizations, such as Meals on Wheels, that are dedicated to mobilized home feeding services for seniors and low-income families.

As we enter the holidays and winter months, the need for nutritious food will grow throughout our most vulnerable communities, especially during this unprecedented time. It’s estimated that 1 in 7 Texans, or more than 4 million Texans, struggle with the threat of hunger each year. Since the onset of the COVID crisis, food insecurity in Texas has grown to impact 1 in 4 families in Texas.

“Millions of Texans have turned to food banks for help during this crisis,” said Celia Cole, CEO of Feeding Texas. “With H-E-B’s support and the commitment of its customers to supporting their neighbors in need, Texas food banks will continue to provide nourishment and hope to families facing hunger.”

Since 1992, the H-E-B Brand and its family of products, has grown to include more than 20,000 items, many of which are made in Texas by Texans. H-E-B Brand items include familiar favorites such as Café Ole, Creamy Creations, Swoon ice cream, Meal Simple, KODI, Mootopia Milk, Central Market, Select Ingredients and Hill Country Fare.
