H-E-B donates $5 million to support Texas food banks and gives $1 million to Meals on Wheels programs across state

The giving initiative will benefit food banks affiliated with Feeding Texas as well as seniors who receive support from Meals on Wheels

As a long-time partner in the fight against hunger, H-E-B has committed $5 million to support food banks across Texas and a $1 million gift to benefit Meals on Wheels programs across the state. The gifts come at a time when a growing number of Texas families are facing hunger throughout our communities. Together with the volunteer support of H-E-B Partners, these gifts further the retailer’s mission to help Texans.

“At H-E-B, we are passionate about taking care of Texans,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs.  “We are proud of our longstanding partnership with these incredible organizations that work year-round to support those in need.”

The $5 million gift will be distributed among food banks in the Feeding Texas network, which will support their efforts to combat food insecurity, a growing issue that impacts families across the Lone Star State. In Texas, more than 22 percent of children experience hunger, according to Feeding Texas

“H-E-B’s generous donation to Texas food banks couldn’t have come at a more critical moment,” said Celia Cole, CEO of Feeding Texas, the state association of food banks. “Across the state, families are facing mounting challenges, and this support will make an immediate and meaningful difference. We are deeply grateful to H-E-B for standing with our communities and helping ensure that no Texan goes hungry.

“This is far from the first time H-E-B has stepped up. They’ve been a committed partner in the fight against hunger for years, consistently showing up with compassion, resources, and leadership. This latest gift is yet another powerful example of their generosity and dedication to nourishing communities across our state.”

For Meals on Wheels Texas, the $1 million gift will support their efforts to provide nutrition services to homebound seniors. In Texas, 13.6 percent of seniors are at risk of hunger, according to Feeding Texas. Every day, the organization delivers more than 100,000 meals, helping Texas seniors live independently without worrying where their next meal will come from.

“On behalf of Meals On Wheels Texas and the many individuals we serve, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to H-E-B for their generous support. Your commitment to caring for our communities ensures that this vital service can continue reaching our most vulnerable neighbors – especially in these challenging times,” said Olivia Burdick, Board President, Meals on Wheels Texas & CEO, The Center in Boerne. “H-E-B’s generosity not only provides nourishing meals but also delivers hope, connection, and compassion to those who need it most. We are profoundly grateful for your partnership and for the meaningful difference you make every day in the lives of aging Texans.”

According to Feeding Texas

In addition to these gifts and as part of its year-round hunger relief initiatives, H-E-B also recently held its Help End Hunger donation campaign, which raised nearly $1 million from customers to support Texas food banks. In a separate donation campaign, H-E-B customers helped raise $500,000 for organizations in Texas helping to feed pets in need.

Additionally, throughout November and December, H-E-B will host its annual Feast of Sharing, a series of festive holiday gatherings that serve over 340,000 meals at 34 dinners throughout Texas and Mexico. In the more than three decades H-E-B has held the celebrations, 375,000 volunteers have helped serve nearly five million meals. Driven by its Spirit of Giving and Helping Here philosophies, H-E-B through its Hunger Relief program, works year-round to raise awareness and battle hunger in communities across the state. Last year, H-E-B donated 35 million pounds of food to families in need. And since 1982, the year the program was founded, H-E-B has donated more than 1.5 billion pounds of food to 5,500 non-profit organizations in Texas and Mexico.
